Pam and Tom’s Story

After his wife had been diagnosed with Myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer, and would need a donor, Tom Kramer started Racing to Register in 2009 when he realized people didn’t understand how easy it is to join the  bone marrow donor registry. Tom decided to take on the challenge of doing 4 marathons, one half ironman, and one full ironman all within 6 months to raise awareness. He was able to hold several bone marrow donor events and was eventually selected by NBC Sports and the World Triathlon Corporation to compete in the Ford Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. This helped launch RTR into a national spotlight that allowed Pam and Tom to register over 6,000 people to date to the national bone marrow donor registries, have 100 matches and 14 transplants. They also founded City Swab, the only one day national donor registration event whereby in their first year they registered 1,200 people. Their efforts continue today, using endurance sports as a platform. They have raised and donated over $300,000.00 toward their cause.
