Recognized Guest - Denise Marks

We are excited to recognize a friend of DBA, Denise Marks, who has directly benefited from the blood cancer research being conducted at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and has gone on to inspire others.

Denise’s Story

“My career over the past 30 years in education has been to nurture and care for others.  After being diagnosed with stage 4, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in June 2021, I was forced to focus on myself and have others take care of me.  For those who know me, this was not an easy transition.  Fortunately, my skilled doctors and my close-knit family and friends facilitated my battle.

After 12 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy and numerous stays in the hospital, I found myself at a crossroads, needing additional treatment.  I am thankful to be the beneficiary of the advancements of blood cancer research and in December of 2021 I qualified for Car-T cell therapy under the watchful eye of Dr. Steven Schuster at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  If not for the advancement of research that is in part made possible by donations like those to the Daniel B. Allanoff Foundation, this successful cutting edge treatment would not have been available to me.  As a result of Car-T cell therapy, I have been in remission for over a year.  While I am not quite back to 100%, I am on my way and more importantly back to watching over others.” - Denise Marks
